Useful Facts About Gopher Trap

By Stephanie Ward

Moles are some of the animals that live exclusively underground inside tunnels that they dig. They have sharp claws and teeth that they use to dig tunnels in the ground. It is very hard to see a mole, but its effect can be seen from above the ground. They can cause major damage to landscape, trees, scenery, and grass. Thus, the best way is to eliminate them as soon as they are noticed. This is what one should know regarding gopher trap.

There are many ways that can be used to remove moles. However, most of the methods available are highly ineffective because these animals rarely come out of their tunnels. The only viable method to use against them is to trap. Once they are caught in the traps, they can be euthanized or relocated to a different place where their activities are not a nuisance to people.

In the market, most traps are manufactured to be fatal in order to kill these animals instantly. It is a very difficult task to catch moles unharmed. For this reason most of the traps are designed to kill them. A person usually sets up the traps by installing them underground in the burrows, with an indicator being the only part left above.

There two major types of traps which are both fatal. These traps are the scissor and the barrel trap. Barrel traps are installed by putting a half- or full-cylinder metal into the barrow. Once the animal reaches the area where the snare is set, a catching loop is triggered which then snaps quickly. The catching loop then snaps around the animal and it gets killed at once.

The scissor trap is the second model of trap. It is also inserted inside the tunnel. The scissor trap has a trigger ring. This ring hangs from its center. The device is triggered to snap and trap the mole when the animal moves the trigger ring using its nose. The snapping jaws have teeth. Scissor traps are only used once.

One of the secrets to being successful at catching moles is to be able to locate active tunnels. In most cases, active tunnels can be identified by the presence of fresh soil mounds deposited at the entrance of the tunnel. Since moles make several tunnels, they sometimes end up using only one or a few of them. That means that many of the tunnels can remain inactive for a very long time.

Even after locating an active tunnel and setting up the trap, it may take up to several days for one to catch the animal. Being patient at this stage is very important. One must ensure that they cause as little disturbance to the tunnel as possible. This is because in case the animal realizes that its tunnel can been tampered with, it may never return to it in a very long time.

Lastly, most people that handle moles usually handle dead ones. It is important to wear enough protective gear in the hands to avoid any physical contact between the animal and the skin. Moles are known to carry parasites that can cause serious health problems.
