Information On Balikbayan Shipping Way

By Donald Williams

At times, life in our country of origin becomes somewhat difficult and thus sometimes on decides to move from one country to another in search of job or education. It is then that some people decide to travel overseas in search of greener pastures. The jobs they get may not be able to cover all their expenses including traveling. This is why people, especially from the Philippines, prefer sending care packages back home through Balikbayan shipping.

You should be aware of how much taxation you have to incur while sending this packages. The last thing you want is for the package to be withheld due to lack of funds to clear it up. The fee has actually increased from 10,000pessos to 150,000. This will go on to make it harder for the majority of the overseas workers to send the packages back home.

Although shipping is expensive, there are cases in which one may get tax free shipments. It, first of all, depends on how long you have resided abroad. A case in point is a Filipino whose passport has been issued by the department of foreign affairs and certified by the department of labor and employment. For such a person, they are able to make shipments tax free.

The question is, do you have to be a Philippine to send these Balikbayan packages? The answer is no. A person from any origin and is living abroad can go on to send these packages. They, however, have to pay the taxation fee. As earlier mentioned, a person originally from the Philippines can send the package free of tax but only if they meet certain expectations.

You cannot help but wonder how many times you are allowed to send a package. The truth is that you can send them as many times as you want. If you, however, are looking to have the privileges, you will have to restrict your shipments to a maximum of three times in a year. The contents of the box should also cost more than p150,000.

There are items that are not allowed in the package and it does not matter if you have met every requirement there is. With shipping, it is best to stick to household items and personal effects. It means you can include both consumable and non-consumable products. Items such as firearms, food that is not in cans among others are not allowed.

At times, the box you want to send goes out of the requirements may be in terms of value or contents. When it comes to value and size, you may be asked to add a bit more of the tax money for the box to be shipped. If the box goes through the x-ray machinery however and they find something suspicious, they will pull it away for thorough physical checking.

You would think that since there is a limit as to how high the value of the boxes goes, there would be a limit as to how low they go. Actually, there is no lowest limit. If your box is of p10000 or less, you are no longer viable for taxation and shipping is free.
