Points Regarding Safety Culture Assessments

Institutions that have a trend of focusing on achieving safety excellence basically allows them to put Environmental health and safety into perspective. The safety performance of a company is directly linked to its welfare culture which is often influenced by psychological, behavioral and situational management design of the company. This therefore brings out the need for Safety Culture Assessments in order to bring out best practices in welfare.

Institutions that are in dire need of a proper working safety culture ought to involve professionals in this activity. Upon finding one, they will be involved in reviewing of documentation, policies and programs in the first step. This provides further insight of work processes and the welfare provisions that the entity has in its daily work. It also allows the assessors to take note of the available and missing documentation.

Safety audits is a task that involves the entire working personnel in the institution. This brings out the need to alert all workers about the task and why it is necessary that they all cooperate with the professionals. This should also allow the individuals to feel free and carry on their daily work keeping in mind that the task is meant to improve on their safety culture.

Besides familiarizing with what is provided in the documents and books, it also involves a location walk. A site visit is often done to allow the professionals to have a view of the exact trend that is in the particular workplace. It also gives them an overview of the basic welfare issues, logistics as well as compare what is provided in the documentation with what is on the ground.

The assessors should have a meeting with the leadership of organization which will involve discussions about the work processes, their current state of safety culture and what they feel should be done about it. This will help them to identify issues that need to be straightened out and additional practices in order to achieve welfare excellence. This should however have no effect on the daily operations of the company.

The team will further conduct individual interviews and focus group discussions. Focus group discussions should comprise of leaders from each work levels and stages so as to have proper representations of all working personnel. Individual interviews may involve further discussions with the leadership personnel on site so as to discuss on definitions of safety, communication excellence and probe further understanding of the information the team has already collected.

After holding discussions and interviews, a close up meeting with the personnel ought to be conducted. This allows the assessors to discuss their preliminary findings after conducting their surveys and also address the current operational issues that are indeed affecting well-being excellence in the institution. This exercise results into a report which should entail actionable steps for the institution to take in order to bring transformation.

Achieving a steady assessment requires the involvement of a professional team. This requires the company owner to be keen in selecting individuals who have a good reputation in providing working solutions to institutions and are excellent in their assessments.
