Some Things To Consider When Choosing Mouthguards

By Gregory Fisher

When one is taking up a martial art like MMA, jiujitsu, muay thai or boxing, one of the most important pieces of equipment would be none other than the mouthguard. Mouthguards are extremely important because they protect the teeth and the face from taking too much impact. They ensure that the wearers do not lose any teeth even after being hit by a cross or a roundhouse kick.

Now, the thing about these pieces of equipment is that they come in so many different types that it might be hard for beginners to choose the right one. For that, they would need some sort of buying guide to help them out. This short little buying guide will enable beginners to choose the best mouthguard for his or her needs.

Now, one has to begin with the size and fitting because that is the most obvious. In order to get the best fitting, one would have to find out which mouthguard is the most comfortable to use while moving around a lot. From choosing between the looser type and the tighter type, it is best to get the tighter type of mouthguard so that it can fit well.

Now the thing about size or fitting is that it may harm the fighter if it is chosen wrong. The mouthguard that is way too fight will feel extremely uncomfortable and may actually affect overall performance while fighting. On the other hand, one that is too loose may actually give the risk of the mouthguard falling out of the mouth while the sparring session ensues.

Now, one will also have to take into consideration the shock absorbing feature. This is another extremely important thing that one has to think about because that is the main protection feature that can keep the teeth safe from a haymaker. Generally, the bulkier types of mouthguard are the ones that have the best kind of shock absorbing feature because they have enough thickness to absorb impact.

Of course, the con about having a bulkier mouthguard is that it may not fit the mouth that well. Also, it might be quite uncomfortable if it is too bulky for small mouths to the point that it could even affect the overall performance. That is why it is best to try to get a custom made guard that is of good fit but has enough bulk to protect.

The last factor to take into consideration would be the overall design. Sure, it may not be as important as the fit and the shock absorbing feature but it is still pretty nice to have a cool looking mouthguard. So take into consideration the design, shape, and the color.

Those are some of the things to take into consideration when looking for the right mouthguard. Now, it was mentioned that a custom mouthguard is the best option to have because it would be able to give the best fit, best size, and the best bulk for a fighter. As long as one has this type of guard on him or her, then he or she will definitely have full teeth protection in fights.
