Applications Of Tungsten Carbide Parts

By Maria Wallace

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest material on earth. Very few elements can be able to cut it making it ideal for various applications. Its manufacture involves reacting tungsten metal with carbon at a high temperature. Some of the properties that it possesses include resistant to acids, high melting points, and a low electrical resistivity. These properties make them ideal for different kind of applications. The following are applications for tungsten carbide parts to take into consideration.

Assembly of cutting tools. Stainless steel has been the most used material in cutting tool manufacture. However, the use of this metal brings a cost-effective option that can replace the use of stainless steel. The fact that the metal has high abrasiveness and high melting points makes them suitable for fast machinery. The metal requires the addition of cobalt to produce a quality level of hardness.

Manufacture of ammunition. Uranium is the most common armour-piercing material used. However, some places regulate usage of uranium or have low uranium reserves. This kind of metal can be a suitable replacement since it has high density and hardness. Its application is common with high-velocity guns and light armor ammunition as well.

Assembly of mining tools. Stainless steel has been a common material used to make mining tools for quite a long time. However, it wears quite heavily when used in high temperature and fast drilling. Therefore, this sort of metal has been a suitable replacement for stainless steel since it can withstand high heat and does not break easily. The material is recyclable at large masses. Therefore, recyclers can ensure that there are quality materials in the market at all-time in the market.

Nuclear reflectors. Nuclear reflection can cause sub-critical reactions in a nuclear plant increasing the level of energy produced. Initially, the material was not part of the nuclear reactor, but an accidental occurrence made it ideal for such usage. The accident occurred during a nuclear weapon testing when one of the experts involved dropped a tungsten carbide brick onto a plutonium sphere creating a sub-critical reaction.

Ideal for jewel making. Popular metals such as silver, gold and diamond have remained renowned for quite a long period in the production of jewelry due to their appearance. However, with this material, a lot of jewel lovers have turned to the metal due to its remarkable appearance. However, the material requires critical polishing to produce an excellent appearance.

Production of surgical tools. Surgical tools require critical consideration during their manufacture. Therefore, they need a material that cannot pit or rust quite quickly making the metal one of the best option when it comes to such consideration. They make the edges of surgical tools while the stem relies on stainless steel or uranium. Products that depend on the metal include forceps, needle holder and graspers.

Manufacture of sports products. There is a variety of sports products that rely on the metal during their production. Some of the conventional products that depend on the material include bicycle tires, motorcycle tires, horseshoes, ski poles, cleats, and ski shoes. They provide a sturdy grip during their use and can last for quite a long time compared with other common metals used.
