The test touches on areas such as dental sciences, clinical procedures, and ethics. The exam is not complete without the practical part. Depending on the state dentists are sometimes required to have first aid certification or CPR.

A background check and an interview are also part of the requirements. The history of an applicant can only be established by a background check. A person can be denied a license due to their history or a crime. It is an important thing that a person is familiar with the type of crime that can hinder them from getting a license. The oral skills of an applicant and their knowledge of the dentistry field is determined by an interview.

A major specialty branch usually tends to have sub-branches. Dentistry is one such specialty that has many other sub-branches. As such, some professionals in this field prefer to specialize in one area. Specialization comes in at higher learning levels, mostly after one is through with their basic dental training.

There are also continuing education courses that can help one to be informed of latest developments in this field. These courses can be taken online or in class. In many states, it is a requirement for dentists to take continuing education courses in order for them to keep their license.
