Manufacturing Process Of The Sterling Silver Handmade Jewelry

By Frances Baker

A handmade jewelry is a type of jewelry which is being assembled and is formed with using the hands rather than using the typical machines used for production. This type is made from many kinds of materials and the production is being applied with many different kinds of techniques. One of the most common types of materials which is being used in the production is the sterling silver.

The sterling silver is an alloy made of silver that contains 92.5 percent weight of silver and 7.5 weight of some other metals, the most common metal is copper. A standard in this usually has a minimum amount of 925 of millesimal fineness. Other types of metals are being used for the replacement of copper for improving the different properties of sterling silver handmade jewelry such as increasing its resistance to tarnish, reducing its casting porosity, and eliminating its fire scale.

All the natural components will be under going the several kinds of processes. And also, because these are unique, it need to be produced given with ample time and having all the necessary skills. These following paragraphs are some descriptions and brief discussions about some processes involved in the manufacturing chain.

First is buying all the needed silver and stones. It would be very important to buy the right sets of these materials. This is an expensive investment so this must be given with proper consideration before buying. These can be bought in various sizes and various weight. See to it that you can be able to buy the best available materials.

Second is to design the jewelry. Almost all things are made and are started with having concepts and ideas and these ideas are considered as rough designs on the minds of the designers. The concepts are utilized by the model makers as references for their creation of original pieces. To create the designs is passionate alchemy but is also difficult.

Third, molding the product. If ever the masterpiece is done already, it will now be used for making high technology mold where in it will also be utilized for making a wax reproduction of a jewelry. After sketching all the final details, it will be passed onto a molding section. In this section, a professional molder will turn the sketches into a mold. This can be considered as the complex level in the process.

Fourth, casting the product. The metallic piece may be unique. An example for this is a customized engagement ring which will be used for rubber molds and this may be produced by a low wax casting. The shape is shaped initially using wax or may be made of metal having a scale of 1.05 for slightly reducing the dimensions of metal piece.

Fifth is setting the stones. Setting involves attaching the precious stones or the precious gems. Stone attachment may involve these 2 commonly used techniques. First is the prong setting or claw setting. Prongs are used and folded over girdles for securing the stones. Second is the bezel setting. Bezels are used to surround the stone, folded over perimeters for securing it underside.

Sixth is the polishing and quality checking. Polishing has two types and these are the mechanical polishing and the chemical polishing. The mechanical way uses felt or cotton disc dipped in abrasive compound to polish the surface. The chemical way is not recommended for use in alloys because it can be risky for the production. The pieces are then checked for some defects by experienced workers to check its quality.
