Effective Procedures For Lead Abatement Chicago

By Matthew Sanders

The effects of heavy metals have been seen in most states that do not practice effective procedures to get rid of the metals. Thus, the people in such countries are at high risk of developing health complications. Nevertheless, several strategies can be sued to alleviate the effects of these heavy metals. Some of the procedures will be mentioned in this article. They are effective and achievable. Thus, they should be followed to the latter. The lead abatement Chicago procedures that you should practice include the following.

The initial step that is usually done is assessing the conditions of the existence of lead. Normally, the metal is added to paint in buildings. When the assessment is done, it will be easier to avoid any associated risks to occupants and workers. Hence, make sure that you have closely followed the procedures to determine if buildings contain this metal then carry out the necessary protective measures.

After that, you should start monitoring and sampling. Generally, the buildings that were built after 1978 are assumed to be free of this metal. The buildings that were built before this year must thus be assessed in case it is suspected that the building contains paint with the metal. Then, monitoring and sampling should follow to determine whether the structure contains this metal indeed. This can be done by inspecting the paint visually, testing the soil for contamination, testing the windows, floors, etc.

An exposure monitoring is then carried out. This can be done in case there is no previous assessment of the building. Also, if there is an earlier assessment, it can be used to determine whether additional monitoring is necessary. In case the evaluation determines that the exposure of the metal should be monitored, personal exposure may also be conducted.

In addition to that, all the subcontractors and contractors that tend to be exposed to this metal occupational, medical surveillance should be done. Hence, all the workers have to be monitored health wise. Normally, biological tests that include blood sampling and analysis of the metal in the body is done. This is done on choice by the subcontractor in a local health center.

In addition to the medical monitoring, these subcontractors must ensure that their hygiene practices do not expose them to the metal. This means that they should avoid inhaling the airborne metal contents in the atmosphere. Hence, they must ensure that they avoid applying makeup like lip balm, eating, drinking and even smoking in the construction site.

More so, the workers should make sure that they protect their respiratory system. Hence, they should have respiratory protective equipment in case the atmosphere may have elevated levels of heavy metal. OSHA requires that all the subcontractors practice respiratory protection techniques to avoid future problems.

Additionally, the building occupants must be protected from the effects of the metal. In case construction work is ongoing in a building where tenants live, the contractors should be very cautious. Hence, when disturbing the metal, there should be protective measures put in place to protect the tenants.
