A Guide To Performing Electronic Equipment Storage

By Dorothy Perry

Electronics are vulnerable to damage since they have lots of parts. They require exceptional care prior to and after storing them. Storage environments can affect the functionality of electronics afterwards. While preparing to commit yourself to long term electronic equipment storage, you ought to take several steps to prepare the gadgets so that they can remain in good state.

You should obtain the correct storage solutions like moving and packing supplies. Some of the supplies you need include bubble wrap, scissors, newsprint, markers, packaging tape and sturdy cartons. If the original specially designed cartons are accessible, you should utilize them since the electronics will fit in them perfectly.

If you are planning to store electronics such as computers, you should back up the data. This way, you will be prepared if the hard drives fail to function after being stored for a long duration of time. Electronic gadgets are designed in such a way that they should not remain unused and without power for a long time. Components such as hard drives may malfunction if they remain unused for a long duration of time. You can ensure that your data is safe and secure by backing it up and storing it in an external hard disk, online or in other storage devices.

Many electronics have numerous parts making up the main device and its complementary parts. Prior to storing the electronics, pull the individual parts apart and keep them separately. You also need to store the plugs separately since they will not be in use. If you have placed DVDs, CDs or game cartridges in the gadgets, take them out and store them separately so that they will not sustain damage or get jammed in drives over time.

Cleaning dirt and dust from electronics before you store them is also essential. Although a small amount of dust and dirt cannot damage electronics within a few days, it can cause problems if it is left in contact with the devices for several months. You should therefore wipe down all the surfaces you can reach to eliminate any contaminants from the electronics. You can also use a compressed air duster to clear out debris and dust from the hard to clean areas of electronics.

Covering the monitors and screens among other items in canvas, cardboard or cotton prior to storing them is also important. The materials used to wrap these items will prevent them from accumulating dust during storage. You should not wrap the electronics in plastic since it can make them vulnerable to moisture buildup over time.

It is wise to remove any batteries that may be present in the electronics. Failure to remove batteries from electronics can lead to destruction of the battery container. Besides, battery acid is likely to damage the electronic devices. It can also not be cleaned easily and can cause harm to the skin.

It is crucial to store electronic equipment in the right environment. You should not store the items in areas that are too windy, hot, cold or humid. You can store the electronics safely for a long time in climate controlled storage units. Such units will allow you to control the temperature and humidity levels that the electronics are exposed to.
